Why We Take the Plunge: The Benefits of Ice Bath Therapy

At Polar Bear Club in Bishopbriggs, we help people unlock their potential through ice therapy, breathwork, meditation, and holistic practice. Every session starts with the same simple, uncomfortable step: getting into the tank. Here's why so many of our members keep coming back for more.

A Natural Reset for Body and Mind
Cold water immersion triggers a rush of adrenaline and endorphins as your body responds to the shock of the cold. Members regularly tell us about the noticeable lift in mood that lasts long after they've stepped out of the tank and into the sauna. It's a natural, drug-free reset — one reason ice bath therapy has become such a popular complement to mental health and recovery support.
Building Resilience Through Discomfort
That first shock of cold is uncomfortable on purpose. Learning to control your breathing and stay calm as your body wants to panic is a skill — and it's one that transfers well beyond the tank. Our coaching and aftercare are built around exactly this: using controlled discomfort as a tool for building resilience, which is why the practice resonates so strongly with people navigating addiction, anxiety, or difficult life transitions.
Contrast Therapy: Ice Bath and Sauna Together
Every indoor session pairs the ice bath with sauna time. Moving between extreme cold and heat — contrast therapy — is thought to support circulation and muscle recovery, on top of the mental benefits of the cold plunge itself. It's also simply a more complete, more comfortable experience: you leave warmed through, not just shivering.

Community and Connection
Whether it's a shared session in our Bishopbriggs tanks or one of our open water events at a Scottish loch or beach, doing something hard alongside other people builds real community. Our open water Sunday sessions — no booking required — are where a lot of members take what they've learned indoors out into open water, surrounded by people who understand exactly why you'd choose to do this.
A Word on Safety
Cold exposure is powerful, but it isn't something to rush into alone. Our indoor sessions are always coached and supervised, and our open water events are a chance to build up to open water safely alongside the club.
If you're new to cold exposure, start indoors with a coached ice bath and sauna session before heading to an open water event. It's a controlled way to learn your own limits before the variables of open water come into play.
